My Dream Chasers Interview With Dr. Yaya Diamond: From Layoff to 7 Continents,
What happens when an unexpected career setback becomes the beginning of your biggest adventure?
I recently sat down with phenomenal lady Dr. Yaya Diamond for a Dream Chasers interview to share the story behind my journey From Layoff to 7 Continents.
Our conversation went beyond the destinations I've visited. We talked about navigating an unexpected layoff, pursuing a dream of traveling to all seven continents, building Dream Worldtrotter, creating my From Layoff to 7 Continents Guided Travel Journal, and the person whose influence continues to inspire this journey—my grandfather.
Today, I have visited five continents, with South America and Antarctica remaining. As I prepare for the final two continents, this interview gave me an opportunity to reflect on how an unexpected ending became the beginning of an entirely different chapter.
How a Layoff Changed the Direction of My Life
A layoff wasn't part of my plan.
Like many people experiencing an unexpected career transition, I had to determine what came next. But instead of allowing that moment to define the rest of my story, I began thinking more seriously about a dream I had carried for years: visiting all seven continents.
That dream gave me something meaningful to work toward.
What followed wasn't simply a quest to accumulate passport stamps. Travel became part of a larger process of discovering what I wanted my next chapter to look like.
That experience ultimately became From Layoff to 7 Continents.
My goal is not to suggest that everyone experiencing a layoff should travel around the world.
Reinvention looks different for everyone.
Instead, my journey is about asking a bigger question:
When life changes unexpectedly, what new possibilities might you finally give yourself permission to pursue?
Five Continents Down, Two to Go
I've now traveled across five continents.
In a matter of weeks comes South America, followed by a destination that represents one of the biggest milestones of my life: Antarctica.
When I reach Antarctica, I will have accomplished my dream of visiting all seven continents.
The significance of that moment goes far beyond geography.
I'll be standing on my seventh continent after a journey that grew out of an unexpected career setback. It's a reminder of how dramatically our lives can change when we decide that an ending doesn't have to be the end of the story.
My Grandfather's Legacy and Love of Adventure
My grandfather is an important part of the story I shared during my Dream Chasers interview.
He lived an extraordinary 106 years. Since I was a child, he regularly nagged me of the importance of adventure in life.
He encouraged me to jump out of airplanes.
He encouraged me to experience the world.
My grandfather was a World War II U.S. Army paratrooper and Purple Heart recipient who frequently traveled the world himself. His adventurous spirit and encouragement helped shape my own desire to explore.
He passed away in 12 January 2026, but the lessons he gave me will stay with me forever.
As I get more and more closer to Antarctica, I've think even more about his influence. I think about the 3 dreams I had after he passed away about traveling to Antarctica.
He taught me through his example that life should be lived to the fullest—not simply observed from the sidelines.
Completing all seven continents will therefore represent more than accomplishing a personal travel goal. It will also be a way of carrying forward the spirit of adventure my grandfather encouraged throughout my life.
Building Dream Worldtrotter
I started Dream Worldtrotter after getting laid off and booked my first international trip to Egypt, France and U.K. to inspire others to make their dreams reality through life's ups and downs.
These experiences shaped Dream Worldtrotter, where I share travel experiences through the lens of exploration, wellness, personal growth and transformation.
My philosophy is:
Travel As Transformation.
I believe travel and exploration can be more than a holiday. More than a vacation.
It can introduce us to new cultures and perspectives. It can challenge our routines. It can create space for reflection. And sometimes, it can help us see ourselves—and what we want from life—differently.
Dream Worldtrotter also reflects the experiences that make my travels uniquely mine, from wellness-focused travel and international destinations to my adventures visiting cat cafés around the world.
Creating the From Layoff to 7 Continents Journal
Another part of this journey has been turning my personal experience into something that can help other people.
I created the From Layoff to 7 Continents Guided Travel Journal, a 100-page resource designed to help people reflect on setbacks, recognize their strengths, explore new possibilities and begin defining what they want from their next chapter.
The journal grew directly from the lessons I've experienced during my own transition.
Travel was part of my reinvention.
Someone else's next chapter might involve starting a business, returning to school, changing careers, pursuing a forgotten dream or simply deciding to approach life differently.
The destination isn't the point.
Moving forward intentionally is.

Having the opportunity to discuss this journey with Dr. Yaya Diamond on Dream Chasers was especially meaningful because our conversation allowed me to connect the different parts of my story.
The layoff.
My grandfather.
Travel.
Dream Worldtrotter.
My journal.
And the decision to continue pursuing a dream that will soon take me to Antarctica.

What I've Learned From Layoff to 7 Continents
One of the biggest lessons I've learned is that we don't always get to choose when a chapter of our lives ends.
We do have choices about what we build afterward.
My layoff was an ending I didn't expect. But it ultimately pushed me toward experiences, destinations and opportunities that I couldn't have predicted at the time.
That doesn't mean every setback immediately becomes something positive. Reinvention takes time.
But I've learned that uncertainty and possibility can exist at the same time.
The Journey Continues to Antarctica
My From Layoff to 7 Continents story isn't finished yet.
South America and Antarctica are coming up.
When I finally step onto Antarctica, I'll be completing a dream that once existed only as an idea—a goal inspired by my love of travel, strengthened through an unexpected transition and influenced by a grandfather who taught me the importance of experiencing the world.
Until then, I'll continue documenting the preparation, the journey and the lessons along the way through Dream Worldtrotter.
Five continents down. Two to go.
And one very big dream getting closer and closer. 🌎
