You're excited to begin your holiday and eager to get to the airport. Will I run into traffic? Did I pack my essentials and travel documents? Is my flight on time or has it been delayed? These are normal concerns to have when heading to the airport. They can lead to a stressful experience. But don’t worry! Here are 20 tips to enhance your airport experience.
Before Going to the Airport

1. Check and Get E-Visa if Needed
Do you need a visa to enter your destination? If so, consider getting an electronic visa, or E-Visa, on your destination's website before arrival. Getting a visa upon arrival can lead to long lines. By securing an e-visa beforehand, you can get out of the airport quicker. For U.S. citizens traveling internationally, check this link to see if you need a visa for your destination.
2. Book Flights During Non-Busy Periods
Flying during mid-week or opting for red-eye flights usually means fewer passengers. This can lead to a less stressful experience at the airport. When booking your flight, consider the time of day and week for a smoother experience.
3. Consider Global Entry or TSA PreCheck
Global Entry is a U.S. Customs and Border Protection program that allows expedited clearance for low-risk international travelers. It also gives you access to TSA PreCheck. TSA PreCheck allows eligible U.S. citizens to go through security screenings at over 200 airports without removing shoes, light jackets, or belts. These programs can significantly reduce airport stress.
4. Download Travel Apps
Some apps can make life easier. Download the airline app for your flight (like Virgin Atlantic or American Airlines). You might also want apps for the airports you’re traveling to, such as SFO, LHR, and HKG. Don’t forget transportation apps like Uber and Google Maps.
5. Get Travel Insurance
You never know what might happen while traveling. Flight delays, cancellations, lost luggage, or medical issues can occur. Protect yourself by purchasing travel insurance before your trip. Look at all coverages before making a purchase. A comparison site like TravelInsurance.Com can help you find the best quotes.
6. Enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP)
For U.S. citizens traveling abroad, the U.S. Department of State offers the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program, or STEP. This program provides free updates on health, weather, safety, and security for your destination. It takes about 20 minutes to enroll, and you can do so here.
7. Get Foreign Currency if Traveling Internationally
It’s wise to carry a small amount of your destination's local currency. Instead of waiting until you arrive at the airport, which often has higher rates, consider getting foreign currency from a local exchange center. One of my favorites is Currency Exchange International, which has over 90 locations across the U.S. and is open seven days a week.
8. Pack Essentials
Make sure to pack essential items like your cellphone, passport, ID, itinerary, credit/ATM cards, and house keys. Some items, like chargers, toiletries, and clothes, may be available at the airport or your destination but can be more expensive and/or difficult to find. Security concerns, like juice jacking, mean it's best to bring your own chargers. Also, check your airport's security protocols for what is allowed in luggage. TSA has a website listing permitted and prohibited items.
9. Choose Seats Before Arriving at the Airport
Selecting your seats ahead of time can reduce stress. If you wait until you arrive at the airport, you might get assigned a seat that isn’t your preference or is uncomfortable.
10. Carry-On or Ship Luggage
Checking in luggage can lead to longer wait times and the possibility of delays or lost bags. Carrying on allows you to keep your items close. Alternatively, consider shipping your luggage to your destination using a service like Send My Bag. This way, you can go through the airport without a suitcase, leading to a more pleasant experience.
11. Dress Nicely and Comfortably
When choosing your outfit for the flight, opt for something nice yet comfortable. Layers are ideal in case the airplane gets cold or hot. Wearing something you feel good in can help you project a positive aura, enhancing your airport experience.
12. Check Traffic from Home to Airport
To reduce stress, check the traffic and estimated arrival time to the airport. Using apps like Google Maps can give you a good idea of traffic conditions. This will help you decide what time to leave, ensuring you arrive early.
13. If Parking at the Airport, Arrive Early and Take Pictures
If you plan to drive and park at the airport, arrive early. This will help you find a parking spot without stress. Take pictures of your car and the parking area to help you remember where you parked when you return.
14. Arrive at the Airport Early
For international flights, arrive at least 3 hours ahead of time. For domestic flights, aim to arrive at least 2 hours early. This ensures you have enough time to get to the boarding gate.

15. Ask for a Seat Upgrade
If you want a better experience on your flight, consider upgrading your seat before checking in or upon arrival at the airport. Keep in mind that upgrades are not guaranteed and depend on seat availability. Ensure you have money or airline miles to cover the upgrade, as complimentary upgrades are rare.
16. Prepare for Security Screening While in Line
To make security screening more efficient, pay attention to what security officers are saying. Know which items you need to remove or take out of your luggage. This will help you get through security quicker.
17. Keep Allowable Small Items in Your Suitcase
Consider keeping small items like your phone, boarding pass, keys, and sunglasses in your luggage. This prevents them from falling through conveyor belts or being taken by someone.
18. Visit an Airport Lounge
If you arrive at the airport three hours before your flight, consider spending time at an airport lounge after going through security. You can eat, relax, and refresh before your flight.
Boarding the Airplane

19. Wait Until Your Boarding Group
It’s important to board your plane when your group is called. Boarding gates can get crowded, which can stress everyone involved. Be respectful by boarding during your assigned group, and you’ll contribute to a better experience for all.
20. Smile and Be Polite
A genuine smile is recognized in every language. When you are polite and respectful, people respond better. You’ll feel good and experience less stress. Let the excitement of your upcoming trip fill your mind, body, and soul with positive energy for a smoother airport experience.
By following these tips, you can transform your airport experience from stressful to enjoyable. Remember, the journey is just as important as the destination!
